THE LOWDOWN
Dance@Brown is big. As part of the Brown community, you can learn, practice, rehearse, choreograph, perform, compete and produce shows through student and faculty-run dance groups, open practices, free workshops, independent projects, and classes at Brown through the Theater Arts and Performance Studies (TAPS) department and studios in Providence. Student-run groups generally have auditions in both the fall and spring, one large show at the end of the year showcasing their own choreography, and rehearse for 6-12 hours a week. Styles represented on campus range from modern to contemporary, hip hop, belly dancing, tap, step, breakin', salsa, swing, ballroom, african, mande, dancehall and many more. The TAPS Department offers two levels of modern dance, a Mande (West African) dance class, and "Dance Styles" which introduces a different style every spring, as well as many other courses. Body + Sole's workshop series provides free opportunities to learn from some truly astounding professional guest artists as well as gifted student dancers and choreographers. The Fall Dance Concert is a showcase of student choreography that runs four typically sold-out nights in the intimate Ashamu Studio. The annual spring Flashmob brings together all the student dance groups and any interested independent dancers for a bit of fun. At the first Body & Sole meeting of the spring semester, the flashmob chair announces auditions for choreographers. Any interested choreographers present their flashmob idea, and those present vote. The winners work closely with the flashmob chair, the student dance groups, and anyone else who wants to join to make it happen.
